Giving teachers the skills and confidence they need to become to be a School Food Champion in their school.
The School Food Champions Programme was developed by the D&T Association to support the specific actions identified in the School Food Plan commissioned by the Department for Education in 2014-2015. The programme was open to secondary schools in England funded by the Department for Education, and who met the DfE criteria for low school meal uptake.
The main focus of the programme was to give our teachers the skills and confidence they need to become to be a School Food Champion in their school, through a wide range of resources and support from the expert D&T Association team.
We were appointed to develop a technical solution by the D&T Association. Using a combination of software including Umbraco CMS, ASP.NET C# MVC and SQL Server, Technical Labs delivered a web application capable of sharing updates and resources to the participating school communities via member only areas, as well as allowing for schools to submit and review weekly reports outlining their total school meal uptake.
The initiative proved to be a success, with the program reaching full capacity fairly soon after its launch, and ultimately saw participating schools displaying a high increase in school meal uptakes, calculated by the reporting technology built by Technical Labs.
